A home built Hands Free fishing kayak
Kingfisher Electric Boat
Kingfisher offers plans for 2 electric kayaks, a KF10 and a KF12. The KF10 is a single seater that is 10 ft long and suitable for fishing small lakes and waters that are hard to get to. The KF12 is 12 ft long, a two seater that is heavier and
more suitable for rougher water and heavier loads. The rear seat is removable to provide additional room in the cockpit for gear. Both boats use the same motor, battery and control system. | The boats are of marine plywood construction with a layer of fiberglass over the outside skin. They have an internal framework to which the skin is fastened using bronze annular ring boat nails and epoxy. No special jigs or fixtures are required for the construction. The result is a light and very ridged boat with lots of dry cockpit space for gear compared to other fishing kayaks.

Two foot pedals control steering, motor stop-start and select motor forward-reverse leaving both hands free. The Speed control is located on the cockpit side panel just forward of the left knee. It is a continuously variable throttle that provides 2-4 times the battery range of the original MK speed selector. |
Motor ControllerThis is a proprietary unit available only from Kingfisher. It monitors the foot pedals and throttle status and drives the motor as directed. It contains a power monitor that limits the motor current to the maximum specified by Minn Kota (40 Amps).
| This greatly reduces the chance of motor burn out if the propeller becomes entangled with weeds or is grounded . This unit mounts on the underside of the cockpit deck and has screw down terminals (4) for the battery and motor connections. A plug at the forward end of the unit has a connector interface for the pedal and throttle connections.
